If you have a child with special needs, then you know that communication can be um..how shall I say it...frustrating?....at times. Yes there is sign language, and that is something that I will forever promote. You all know how I feel about using sign language.
However there are some awesome tools out there to enhance your child's communication. Some of them are super stinking cute....
Like the Kimochi Bug!!
We were given the opportunity to review the cute little Kimochi Bug. It arrived in the cutest little box, and came with two packages of Mixed feelings. When we first got them, it was actually Chloee who fell in love with them. Of course as soon as I sat down with both her and Rhett and went over all of the feelings Rhett quickly became enthralled with it.
It took about a week or so for Rhett to learn all of the emotions. Our biggest reason for wanting to try this, is the fact that Rhett head bangs whenever he is upset about something.....anything.
So after teaching him all of the emotions, it was time to put it into action.
The next time he got upset, I pulled his bug down and asked him to pull out the "guy" (this is what he calls the feelings) and tell me what he was feeling.
He quickly searched through them and found the sleepy guy. He handed it to me and just grinned from ear to ear.
I asked him if he was sleepy...(surely he really doesn't know what this meant)....and to my surprise he told me he wanted his binky and to go night night.
...Oh it gets better. He actually went to sleep too.
Of course, he doesn't pick the correct emotion every time.
But, I have found that just pulling his bug out and asking him to look through and find a feeling guy, distracts him from the whole head banging thing. I don't think we have had more than 5 episodes of actual head banging since we got his bug.
That is huge considering he has had a permabruise on his forehead for the last year or so.
I'm hooked, and so is Rhett.....and Chloee for that matter.
I would love to see these used in Rhett's pre-school, as well as by some of the early intervention programs. I have already talked with his OT, and she thinks its a great idea. She is working on getting a grant to get some Kimochis of her very own.
Now, here's the best part. Because the people over at Kimochis are so amazing, they have offered to give a Kimochi to one of our readers!!

That sounds like a wonderful way to communicate.
Have you heard about the Kidz blog? A mom whose blog I follow just started it and it's a pretty useful site about special needs children with a very uplifting attitude. Just thought you might be interested.
Best of luck to you in all your parenting adventures.
Welcome to SITS!
Well - I just saw the link to Kidz on your blog - sorry to be redundant with my comment.
Hey, I'm commenting and I'm going to hit the follow button when I'm done. But I don't have a twittering machine. Can I still be entered?
I like the Cloud guy and the Octopus best. And the BUG! Aaaa. When they come out with an indecisive character, that will be me.
Ok. CLoud.
No. Octopus.
Aaa!
Can I be entered into the drawing anyway?? Please?
I love it, We have to have one for the kids and maybe we will get ride of Jacobs permabruise and Hunter's hand will finally heal!!!!!
I would have to say I love all the different emotions that you can buy aswell and not just the basics that come with your character.....
Of course we follow you on Twitter and here's my Tweet

I have never heard of these before, but they sound FANTASTIC. I love all the different emotions, I can't believe they even have embarrassed and guilty.
I love these!!! I had no idea they existed, but they would be SO GREAT for my kids! I love that the facial expressions are so realistic (for a non-human form). Especially for mine with autism.
Ok, my favorite shape is the bug, because he is just so darn cute!!
And I can't decide what set of emotions I like best. I almost with they had a "basic" set of happy, sad, mad, glad, etc. Mainly because those would be the first ones I'd teach and they seem to be spread out over the different packages.
Thanks for sharing them, I hope I win!!!
And I follow your blog (I always forget to add that!!!)
But I don't have twitter. :( sorry...could I tweet here everyday?? tweet tweet!!
Does it count if we blog about it? Or was that just the other one?
I like the bug and octopus but can't decide between the two, lol! These sound super neat- I follow your blog all ready and I will most likely post on my blog to help spread the word, whether an entry or not...I love letting folks know about neat products for kiddos. thanks!
Ooh, no doubt my fave is the bug. How clever are these??
i don't need an entry, I just wanted to stop in and say welcome to SITs

I follow and I so need and want this. Do they have one that says my head hurts take me to the hospital
I would like a chance to win. We know that our son may be non verbal because of his syndrome. I think this idea of having little toys to communicate is a good idea.
Thanks!
I love the bug...love the concept that he is afraid to change!
The new lovey dove is adorable too!
Ok, this is a downright dirty plea to win this one. I have discovered just how badly my students need to learn feelings and my fun pocket chart just isn't doing it for them. They are begging for the bug!!
I like the Kimochi Bug. Too cute and a great idea!
Thanks for the chance!
